Waterproofing

At Elite Tile Setters, we train all of our installers on waterproofing with Schluter®-KERDI. Schluter®-KERDI is a pliable, sheet-applied, bonded waterproof membrane and vapor retarder with limited crack-bridging capabilities. KERDI was developed as a waterproofing membrane to be used in conjunction with ceramic and stone tile coverings. Tiles can be installed directly on KERDI using the thin-bed method. KERDI is ideal for use in tiled showers, bathtub surrounds, residential steam showers, and other tile applications in wet areas. The proper installation of KERDI ensures a water tight installation, eliminating the possibility of water damage behind the tile assembly, which can lead to mold and mildew.

Grout

When choosing grout, it’s important to understand what type of grout is best for your intended use. Grouts vary, and some may be more durable than others, so it’s important you find one that is suitable for the unique needs of your next project.

Cementitious grout is the most common grout type and consists ofa flowable mixture of portland cement, sand, pigments and water. With this grout, cement acts as the binding agent for the mixture. Sanded grout is extremely durable and can be used in most types of interior tile installation including floors, showers and backsplashes. Cementitious grout can also be used in most exterior applications.

Single Component Grout is a premium ready-to-use specialty grout designed for commercial and residential installations of porcelain, ceramic and natural-stone tiles. Single Component Grout can be used to grout both interior and exterior tile, and its dense composition helps to prevent water-based stains by providing water repellency to the grout surface. Single Component Grout, such as MAPEI Flexcolor CQ, is formulated with the latest innovation in quartz aggregate, which ensures color consistency and ease of cleanability. In addition, Single Component Grout can also be used on sensitive tile surfaces such as porous natural stone. It also requires no sealer and cures naturally from evaporation due to the low level of water in the formulation.

Profiles

Profiles protect tile edges from cracking and chipping, eliminate the need for caulking, and provide easy transitions between adjacent floor and wall coverings. Profiles can also be integrated within field tiles and can add bold or subtle design elements, while helping to ensure the integrity of your tile installation. Finishing and edge-protection profiles are available in a variety of shapes, colors, patterns, and sizes. These profiles open the door to limitless design possibilities and provide an attractive alternative to traditional ceramic or stone trim pieces.

Uncoupling Membranes

Uncoupling Membranes are specifically designed to prevent ceramic and stone tile installations from cracking as expansion occurs due to moisture and temperature changes. Typically made of polyethylene, Uncoupling Membranes also serve as a waterproofing layer that protects moisture-sensitive substrates, such as plywood and OSB. The free-space on the underside of the uncoupling mat, provides a route for excess moisture and vapor to prevent damage to the tile layer above. Modern uncoupling membranes are designed to perform all these functions while still providing adequate support/load distribution for the tile covering.

Mortars

Mortars are used to securely bond mosaic, stone, glass or large and heavy tiles. All mortars are not created equal and, due to the unique requirements of each project and material type, understanding which mortar to use in each application is essential for the longevity of a tile installation. Modern, advanced, thin-set mortars feature unique characteristics and are specifically formulated to bond each specific material. The premium mortars we select are engineered to provide excellent bond strength and tile support and also feature additional antimicrobial protection which inhibits the growth of stain-causing mold and mildew when used in wet areas such as showers.
